Punjab Government Reduces School Hours for Summer Season
Lahore, April 3, 2025 – The Punjab government has announced a reduction in public school hours for the summer season, cutting 30 minutes from the regular schedule. This change, which will be effective from April 7 to October 15, aims to provide relief to students and teachers from extreme heat during peak summer months.
The decision was officially communicated through a notification issued by the School Education Department (SED) of Punjab. According to the new schedule, single-shift schools will now operate from 7:30 AM to 1:00 PM from Monday to Thursday. On Fridays, school hours will be further reduced, with classes concluding at 11:30 AM. Previously, schools remained open until 1:30 PM during summer.
A Response to Rising Temperatures
The adjustment in school timings comes as Punjab experiences increasingly high temperatures during summer. The province often records extreme heat, making it difficult for students to concentrate in classrooms, particularly in schools with inadequate cooling facilities. By slightly reducing school hours, the government aims to ensure students are not exposed to prolonged heat during the hottest part of the day.
An official from the SED stated, “This decision has been made to prioritize the well-being of students and staff. As temperatures continue to rise, it is essential to take precautionary measures to prevent heat-related illnesses and discomfort in schools.”
Impact on Schools and Students
The reduction in school hours will allow students to return home earlier, helping them avoid the peak afternoon heat. Many parents and teachers have welcomed the move, acknowledging the challenges of studying in non-air-conditioned classrooms during summer.
However, some educators believe that the decrease in instructional time may slightly impact academic performance. To counter this, schools might need to adjust lesson plans and focus on efficient teaching strategies to ensure students continue to receive quality education within the reduced hours.
Future Considerations
The Punjab government is also considering additional measures to ensure student safety during extreme weather conditions. Possible steps include improving school infrastructure, installing cooling systems, and ensuring the availability of clean drinking water.
As the summer approaches, the SED has advised school administrations to take necessary precautions, including allowing students to carry water bottles and avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
The new schedule reflects the government’s effort to balance education and student health, ensuring that learning continues while minimizing the risks associated with extreme weather conditions.
